This is the source for information about the Unicycle Division of the Woodland Park Parade of Lights.
It all started in the fall of 1997, I saw a unicyclist at Elitch Gardens in Dever. It reminded me that I wanted to learn to ride a unicycle when I was young. Well I wasn't getting any younger (and who is), so I bought a unicycle and started learning to ride. It was the middle of September when the unicycle arrived and I immediately started practicing. After one week in the basement it was time to go outside.
By October I could perform level 1 skills. My goal became the Parade of Lights. I wanted to be good enough to ride in the local Christmas parade here in Woodland Park. I met Jeremy Cunningham, another local unicyclist, through the unicycling home page and we both rode in the parade. I rode my 24" Semcycle and Jeremy rode his 6 foot griaffe (20" wheel).
The theme of the parade is "Lights" so I wired a 50 light string of tree lights to run on 12 volts. I pinned the lights to an old jacket and put a lead-acid motorcycle battery in an old backpack under the jacket. Jeremy put a set of lights on the giraffe.
I had fun riding in the parade. It was alot of work for a begining unicyclist. Since then I have had alot more practice at unicycling. I ride most every weekday at lunch. The usual lunchtime route is 1.7 miles (I have a distance computer on the unicycle). I also enjoy riding on rough terrain.
Two years ago I learned to juggle clubs while riding the unicycle. I put lights inside of a set of Airflite "Glo-in-the-dark" clubs. I tried to juggle in the parade but my hands stopped working because the temperature was in the teens and it was windy. Since then, I have learned to juggle with gloves and juggle clubs in the parade.
Parade time is nearing. I am looking for any unicyclists who are interested to join me in the parade. This years theme is "The Wonderful World of Dr. Suess." If you are interested, please send me e-mail.
To enter the parade you MUST sign a waiver and mail it to me.
